Thanks everyone for the feedback. I'm going to swap out the Engine Coolant Temp sensor on Monday. It only seems to do this after the engine is good and hot, so maybe we're on to something. at idle, the RPM guage will typically hum at 800... but when it's hot, it jumps to around 1,200 and down to 400...

Let's hope it's the ECT!

Hello,

My 2003 A4 Quattro (3.0) is starting to experience odd rough idle periods.
It will pur like a kitten sometimes, then other times appear like it's ready
to stall. Sometimes it won't start without cranking it over several times.
It has NEVER done any of those things before 85,000 miles. At 85k the plugs
were replaced and the mechanic actually broke one of the coils which he then
replaced.

Since the car has 93,000 miles on it today, I suspect one or more of the the
ignition coils mail be going bad.

I'm considering replacing all 6. Does anyone have any
experience/recommendations for me?

Troy, sounds like you already have a place to start - but just FYI,
the symptoms you describe were NOT what I had when 1 of my coil packs
went bad about 2 months ago. The car would start fine, and idled fine,
but would stutter badly when I put any load on the engine - it was
only running on 3 cylinders, basically. That type of failure would
throw a code, causing the CEL to light up.

Cost to replace one was $300-plus, so I did NOT consider just
replacing the other 3 at the same time!

I agree that it doesn't sound like a coil pack. More like a vacuum leak, failed MAF or coolant sensor.

Those dealers sure can get greedy.

Most on-line sources charge around $30 for an R series coil pack and changing them takes only a minute. I have seen them for as low as $23.

Do you have the repair manual?
AFAIK the ign coils should be directly on top of the spark plugs on your '03
V6 3.0.

Hey Troy,

I had a similar concern with my 2004 A$ Audi Quattro 3.0 and I
subscribed to ALLDATAdiy.com and it has been very useful. I am handy
and like to do things myself and this subscription gives me diagnosis,
repair, TBSs, recalls and labor times. I hope you find it useful -
it's pretty cheap considering the information comes directly from the
manufacturer.

Check it out - I copied the link below for you.

Yeah, that's it, it sits on top of the spark plug and under the spark
plug wire.
