I agree that it's literally about his dog, Martha, but he wisely made
the
lyrics just ambiguous enough so that, if you didn't know about the
dog,
you might think he was singing about a "silly" girlfriend.

Absolutely. McCartney is a musician some have called "sloppy;" I
think his laid back approach is testament to his inherent musical
ability. "Mainly I'm just doing a tune and then some words come into
my head, you know," indeed!
