How good were the band ? Well, there is something about BLackmore's Night
that just doesn't work for me. They go on about Renaissance music but
don't

play any. They ask people to dress up but Ritchie wears his old Man in

gear with a pair of funny boots. They just aren't .... well it is hard to
tell what they are trying to be in the first place... but they come across
as fake. You know those cheap reproduction antiques you get ? Blackmore's
Night are a bit like that. Their version of medieval comes from pantomime
rather than history. Their idea of fantasy is cliched wishy washy
nonsense.

fake. OK, they say they aren't trying to be authentic to renaissance music
but this stuff is like some naive child's based on a Disney cartoon.
That's a brilliant analysis. Like the Americans' "Renaissance Fayre" things,
Blackmore's Night is a modernised, sanitised, fake view of the past.

But still... I like it. I like the mix of new and old musical elements,
contrived though it may be, and I actually think it works. No, it's not
authentic, but as long as you go in knowing it's not going to be authentic
then I don't see how you can be disappointed. It's still quality music.

It is perhaps a little annoying that they go on and on about renaissance
music and then don't produce any.
I have been listening to the new album since I got it at the gig and I
actually prefer it to the previous one I have (Under a Violent Moon). There
is a fair amount of electric guitar on there which we didn't get to hear at
the show very much. I think the best songs are the covers, but there is some
good stuff of their own.
I think they should drop this renaissance pretence and just go for folk
ock - and if it has shawms or whatever, so be it ! Some of their music is
reminiscent of Jethro Tull and Ritchie admits liking them so why not just go
for it ?

for what the local press have been saying. There was a fuss about Blackmore
wanting trees and when they eventually got some silver birch he turned them
down as they had been felled and so weren't live. the theatre manager had to
go off to the garden centre and buy something else !

The story of "Jon's idea" is still floating about. This was Ritchies
response on the get together idea ....

Deep Purple will always be a part of his life and Blackmore added he would
not be averse to playing a few gigs with the rest of the old line-up.

"I didn't want to play Smoke on the Water (probably Blackmore's most famous
opening riff) for the rest of my life.

"I wouldn't go back into the studio, but maybe play a few shows with them,
but probably for only about a week.

"I like them all as people, but I think management might be a problem," he
said.
