Default Worrying distress.

My 9 month old g/son, normally a very happy baby,
occasionally awakes from sleep sobbing inconsolably.
He is very distressed and hysterical.

Any clues or pointers for this.?

Is it normal?

It is quite worrying.

I have a few kids who wake up like this. and they're both brothers. The
third brother also always woke this way. I don't know why they do it...
soemtimes i wonder if it is the beginning of night terrors.. or maybe they
heard a noise and in their sleep it jarred them awake... could it have been
a gas pain? who knows.... some kids don't want to sleep and will whine
their way to sleep... sleep for an hour and start to wake... and cry again
because they still think it's 5 mins later and they never slept...

Don't worry I've seen a few kids do this. Most will grow out of it.
They say a child who is woken up with a smile will smile back. Try being
happy and smiling at him even if he is sad when he wakes.

Good luck gramps

Thank you kindly.

This is a very infrequent occurence, and happens
before I have a chance to be supportive.

The wee soul is just heartbroken, for no apparent reason.
It is not for lack of love and affection.

Maybe he is disoriented when he wakes up or if he wakes up in a room alone
perhaps he is just lonely when he wakes up and is upset he doesn't see
anyone.

Good Luck...

My son did this at 3 mos of age. I figure that it was a form of night
terrors. Just console him that everything is ok, and don't get worried or
tense up--they can sense it and it makes it worse. Also, if he is
screaming, and not really awake, don't TRY to wake him up...it makes it
worse. My son is now 20 mos and perfectly normal...this only lasted 3
mos...

My daughter also went through night terrors at the age of 2...scary, but
normal I guess..

Good luck!!
