Some of you may recall my opinions of virus scanners, and of http://housecall.trendmicro.com I continue to support most AV products, but as a result of real-world experiences in the past year, Trendmicro's product line is the only one I now recommend for either commercial or residential customers. Trendmicro's product line remains among the very few that detects the more esoteric ley-logging trojans frequently used by professional identity thieves. My experience is that about one in four systems having current versions of the two most 'popular' A-V scanners discover an undetected infection, usually a trojan. Trend's individual-PC product is PC-cillin Internet Security. Far beyond just a virus scanner and integrated firewall, PC-cillin also includes adware/spyware/malware detection and removal, e-mail client and Web-based e-mail scanning, URL filtering, inbox spam filtering via an intelligent scanner, and will scan outgoing communications for privacy content (such as one's name, address, SSAN, credit card numbers, and telephone number, as well as any other user-specified information). Additionally, Trendmicro's auto-update function is not a simple weekly function, but is real-time, sometimes up to several times daily, if and as warranted by new discoveries. Trend offers a free, fully-functioned 30-day trial download of their products at their website. If you're near the end of your current subscription to a competitive product, or just want the product after trying it, here's a deal. Reg $49.95, for $24.95. No shipping required, as they send you a key via e-mail to change your installed Trial Version to a full license. http://www.discountedsoftwarestore.com/pcdetail.cfm Trend also has a not-very-advertised $25 competitive upgrade rebate. Send in your competitive product proof-of-purchase, manual front-page, or CD (must be retail CD, not an OEM CD). http://www.trendmicro.com/ftp/produc...lin-rebate.pdf Net is that you can have what I consider to be one of the most effective products on the market, a year's free updates, and keep your nickel, all for a couple of postage stamps. Just so happens my subscription to CAI EZTrust AV is set to expire in 2 weeks. I've been very satisfied with it and my visits to Trend's free online scanner has never turned anything up. Just the same, I think I'll give Trend's package a spin as it appears to offer quite a bit more for the same money. Are there any issues setting it up on a network ? I'd hate to lose the ability to share the printer and stuff like that. |

Rick,
Try it, you'll like its ease of use. No network issues - Trend specializes in corporate network security products using centralized deployment and administration, and that "network awareness" extends to PC-cillin as well. The firewall has four pre-defined configurations - Direct Connetion, Home Network, Office Network, and Wireless Network. All are then very easily editable via c****ing some pre-configured checkboxes for common network functions/services. You may easily add any additional rules for any unique requirements. Note that Direct Connection offers the highest pre-configured protection, and that Home Network ***umes no Internet connection (or a router-based firewall) and is thus the lowest level of protection. The Home Network setting does still scan network traffic for network-aware viruses and trojans, however. Since I'm running XP SP2 RC1 and it has its own quite good integrated firewall, I use the Home Network cdefinition to let Windows perform firewall functions, while Trend simply scans traffic for bad stuff. You should be fine with Office Network or Wireless Network (the difference is that Wireless blocks NetBIOS ports 137-139 and 445, and Domain Service ports 88, 329, and 1026). Note that if you use any https websites on port 443, you may have to check the box enabling it. Allan -- One asks, many answer, all learn. Jim,
First, try using the Home Network profile. Will it work? Though not as good as other profiles, it will provide some level of protection while we analyze the problem further. Do you have, or have you had, any other software firewall installed? Some older versions of some of them don't completely uninstall. Next, what is your service? Dial-up, DSL, Cable, or Satellite? And from what ISP? Do you have a router attached to a broadband modem, or is your connection directly to an ISP-provided modem/router? Is the connection Ethernet or USB? What manufacturers and models of router, modem, or modem/router? And finally, what version of Windows (if XP SP1, you will need to disable Windows firewall). I'll be getting back on this tomorrow evening, but it's getting a bit late for me now. That's when I'll try Home Network. I have tried Direct Connection and Wireless Network, neither worked. Disabling the Internet Security firewall did not work, either - still no connection. The older firewall was a Sygate product bundled in VCOM System Suite. Following the removal, I ran jv16 Power Tools to clean up, then manually deleted VCOM keys from the registry, then ran Power Tools again. Service is cable, with Road Runner. The cable modem is "all-in-one": cable modem, router, hardware firewall and wireless access point (Motorola SBG 1000). The wireless network adapter is USB (Netgear MA111). Windows is XP SP1, the firewall was disabled. -- Jim McDonald |

Jim,
If disabling Trend's firewall didn't help, it's more likely another issue, and I suspect the remains of another firewall, or the Layered Service Provider in Winsock2. Check for latest drivers and firmware for Motorola and Netgear. Next is LSPFix, which repairs and renumbers the Layered Service Provider list (must be sequential) for Winsock2. If LSPFix doesn't find any bad LSP entries to recommend repairing, and you dont see an entry that appears to be Sygate-ish, c**** Finish, and it will renumber the list on exit. It's at http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm Might also try installing and then removing the latest Sygate product, it may clean-up after the older one. Particularly in the CLSID sections, entries may not contain data recognizable by jv16 as being Sygate. Allan -- One asks, many answer, all learn. Jim,
Also, go to Administrative Tooks, Services, and carefully review the list for anything appearing Sygate. There was an older version that failed to stop the service before uninstall, and thus the service was not removed. If you find one, right-c****, Stop, and then right-c****, Properties, Startup Type, Disabled. Allan -- One asks, many answer, all learn.
