Default Olympics: What's with NBC's excuses for all the empty seats?

C'mon. We aren't stupid. During every competition I've seen so far
there've been five times more empty seats than occupied ones. You'd
think the folks in the stadiums could hear Bob Costas' commentary.

Bob offered like a hundred different excuses for the sea of empty
seats, including:

-- Everybody in Greece goes on vacation in August.

-- This is early going; later on, during the finals, folks'll show up.

-- The expensive seats, the ones you see on TV, are empty, but the
cheap ones you can't see, well -- they're JAMMED.

I thought of a few more than are equally plausible:

-- Nobody in Greece cares about half-***** women.

-- Everybody just happened to go to the bathroom all at once.

-- All the residents are Greek Orthodox, and their religion forbids
them from throwing their money away.

But, you know, Greece was pretty dumb to spend so much on this stuff.
Goes to show Americans aren't the only ones in denial: you can build
it, but that don't mean they'll come.

with all due respect, NBC is not responsible for the empty seats, and it's
pretty difficult to avoid showing them.

I'm the biggest NBC basher there is, but empty seats is not their problem.

While this thread is in rec.arts.tv, it is probably worthwile to ask,
what numbers of empty seats have there been in front of NBC's TV
screens?

plenty, believe me. I've only watched a few events... and definitely seen
WAY more empty seats than those with bodies in them. I have no way to
quantify what I've seen.

NBC has got to be giving the ABSOLUTE WORST coverage
I have ever seen for any televised sporting event, bar none!

They cut to commercials 8 times in a 30 minute period and
put those g-ddammed USELESS animiated preview-blurbs in the
lower right hand corner of the screen for 30+ seconds
when they come back with coverage.

Bob Costas' is a f--king retard. I wish someone would stuff
a g-ddamed package of tube socks down his throat to shut
him the phuck up. (..as well as that ditzy ***** with him in the
anchor's chair too!)

I AM CURRENTLY WATCHING ON THE DISH ON THE
GREECE TV STATIONS (..AND OTHERS) AS NBC TELEVISION'S
COVERAGE OF THE OLYMPICS IS SO COMPLETELY F-CKED
UP THE A-S AS TO BE UNWATCHABLE AND UTTERLY
DISTRACTING FROM THE SPORT/SPIRIT OF THE GAMES.

If I was an NBC/GE shareholder, I would be ****ting bricks
right now and would issue a "sell" order to my broker first
thing in NYC tomorrow as NBC has completely screwed
up Athens 2004 for USA viewers. Get a small dish and
watch other channels which are far superiour in their coverage
and commentary.

It will be interesting to see what happens on Monday. August 15th is a
major religious holiday for Greek Orthodox, (Dormition - anniversay of
the death of Mary) they fast for two weeks prior. This may include not
going out to special events.

The Greek TV stations didn't have to invest as much money in
acquiring the rights to broadcast the games, nor are they
driven by their owners to provide as consistently high
return on their investment.

Well, the August vacation could explain why a lot of Greeks aren't
there. Europeans take that stuff seriously. I lived in Europe for 3
years and when I went to see the 'flower carpet' in Brussels (a
capital city no less) it was like a ghost town. Almost scary. Even the
American Emb***y was closed. Plus, much like Boston during the DNC
they might not want to deal with the h***le. As for other countries,
including the US, first we heard for years about how Greece wouldn't
be ready, venue and hospitality-wise which can cause a damper and then
for months we've heard about the security precautions and how you
could be a sitting duck if you go. People don't do these things on the
spur of the moment (esp from the US--quite a distance) and might just
have figured screw it. I think some events WILL pick up but was
surprised at the empty seats during the swimming events--they're
usually pretty popular--but then they were outdoors (unlike that great
swimming stadium in Sydney) and I saw Michael Phelps' mother in the
audience and they looked like they were BAKING in the 90+ heat. Unless
I was going to be in the AC during some of those events, knowing it's
Greece in August, I wouldn't want to be there.
