VueScan doesn't use the Twain standard, to my knowledge. It is a very unintrusive program. Uses it's own .ini file, and doesn't put anything into the registry, except maybe a registration key when you buy it. You can try it for free to see how it works. Just start the app, and it should find your scanner, if it's connected and turned on. I have an Epson 1650 Photo scanner, and also had a very trying time getting the driver installed. What finally worked for me was to get rid of every vestige of old Twain Drivers on my system. Previously, I had a Twain interface installed by an old outdated Mustek scanner, which quit working. I searched my drive and my registry for anything I could think of, like Mustek, SP8000 (the model), twain, scanner, etc. Every time I found anything, I blew it away, and when I finally got it all gone, the Epson interface loaded, like magic. If you do anything like this, be sure to back up probably your Windows directory, and any other directories you delete stuff from, and create a restore point before screwing around in the registry. Good Luck.
