never thought the shifting was too bad. Some clutch chatter was common and moving out of 4WD took a lot of force sometimes. It was a crude 4WD system but nothing particularly bad about changing gears and I never replaced a clutch for the 70k plus miles I drove each of these cars. Brakes sucked on the 83's though and steering took a lot of effort. Also there was no power from the engines. this. I'm buying a transmission for a 1984 Tercel 4WD as part of a package deal, it was bought new from the dealer in 2000 or 2001. Toyota redesigned the 2nd and 3rd gear synchros to correct bad shifting on these transmissions, as outlined in a TSB for the car in 1990. My question is, would the transmission purchased in 2000 contain the redesigned synchros or the old, ****py synchros? |

So unless the transmission was made after the new parts came out, the old
parts are still in it? I would hope that they would have put the new synchros in every transmission that they sell. I would be disappointed if I was the one who bought the new transmission and the old synchros started giving me trouble later on. I can't complain though, because I'm spending so little on this transmission. My 1986 has problems with 2nd and 3rd, as did my 1985. I doubt it was very
bad when the car was new, but my 1986 had the problems when I bought it at only 136,000 km. The 1985 only developed them around 300,000. I get the clutch chatter sometimes, and they also had a revision to fix that problem. I have plans to correct the lack of engine and braking power. My 85 didn't have power steering but the 86 does. How high was the total mileage on your cars? I drove each about 70k miles. The headgasket was going on one when I got
rid of it. Each always had brake problems. By the way, underneath the 83's at least had cheap stiffeners which attached diagnally. Just metal tubes flattened at each end. All 4 (2 on each car) had cracks where they fastened to the vehicle by bolts. Could not see cracks unless you looked very carefully because they were right next to bolts. If your year has same stiffeners underneath you may want to look for cracks and replace them if necessary. Should improve handling and tire wear. If you have owner manual, it showed under routine maintenece 6 bolts underneath that were supposed to be tightened routinely. 4 were for the stiffeners. Wow. You have a 84 tercel and it is still running ? And you bought a
new transmission on it ? I guess the car must have some sentimental to you. Thanks for the tip. I'll check those stiffeners. I've never had brake
problems even after 300,000km, other than just pads and rotors. The 85 had rusted out front supports but the 86 has a perfect frame.
