in order to remove the flywheel (1987 Tercel, 3E engine) while replacing my clutch. [ The Haynes manual suggests sticking screwdriver b/n the ring gear and [ starter teeth (to keep the flywheel from moving), and then using a [ a breaker bar to loosen (and later tighten) the nuts... but that seems [ risky to me -- might break the gear teeth. (Then again, I've never [ replaced a clutch, so I'm overreacting...?) Any suggestions on impact wrench types/brands? Since I don't have an air compressor, it seems to make the most sense to get an electric one (but not cordless), say in the 240 ft-lb range. www.harborfreight.com has one for $50 (item: 45252-1VGA), but it doesn't look like there's a way to vary the speed ==> it may twist the bolt head off (?) Your thoughts? Thanks in advance. -Ted |

I've used an 18-24" breaker bar and extension on all such nuts, using either the flywheel or a structural member as a brace, never needed to use an impact wrench. Otherwise,I'd strongly suggest an air compressor and a variable-torque impact wrench. good luck! Everyone seems to see a need to remove the flywheel on this group. Yet when I did my own clutch at 180k, the flywheel looked like great, like a circular mirror. No need to fix what ain't broke, I say. |

To tell you the truth, I cant see the difference between the two. In fact, aprts are literally interchangeable. I've used the heck out of it, none will vary in speed, let off before and you can bump it then. -- "I am saddened that Vietnam has yet again been inserted into the campaign."
