Does anyone knows if this new version resolves the idle mode excessive power
consumption issue of the new HD4870 and 4850 (with respect to the 3850/70
cards). Earlier, ATI stated that it is a driver problem. Any tests are
welcomed.

It may be splitting hairs once the whole system's power consumption is taken
into account. Even if a driver "fix" lower the card's power drawing by 10W
or 20W, it's only a small difference in the overall scheme of things. The
4870 currently draws about the same amount of power as the GTX260 at both
idle and load.

Hi,

I think that what can be obtained from a 4870 card is something like 40-50W
drop if "the driver" is corrected! The effect of a driver version is very
easy to measure. One can connect a cheap wattmeter between the wall and the
computer case plug. Measurements should be done with different driver
versions. I have actually an intel Q9450 + asus P5Q DLX + 4GB (=4x1GB) of
6400 DDR2 + 4 western digital HD's (two of them are raptors 74GB) + 1 DVD
player + 1DVD burner+ internal smartcard reader +floppy 3.5. I have also a
PCI express DVB-T card + a PCI sat card (both for digital TV). My video card
is an original sapphire HD3870 512 MB. When in idle under vista 32, this
system consumes 130W. When in Full load, this number raises to 220W. In my
case, the computer in on several hours a day, so 30W lower in idle can be
important. That is why I am asking (and waiting) before upgrading to an
HD4870.
