getting an error on the installing files screen. A blue screen comes up and says "WindowsXP has determined your C: drive to be corrupted and cannot be repaired, setup will not continue." I formatted the harddrive and reinstalled WindowsME and the drivers for all the subsequent hardware in my computer and tried installing again with no luck. How can my c: drive be corruped? I have run Norton Utilities' Disk Doctor, Scan Disk, etc. and have not had any problems come up. On a side note, I tried to get to use the Windows online support (which says unlimited free installation support) but they asked for the product ID. How do I get the product ID if the darn thing won't even install on my computer? I tried putting the Product Key but no go. So much for support. |

Try this: Go to the hard drive maker's web site and download their diagnostic program. Run the diagnostic in "complete mode" (may take 30 to 45 minutes depending on size of drive) If the drive is OK, then your troubles are elsewhere. If the drive is defective and is still under warranty, most diagnostic software from makers will print out a RMA for you with instructions on how to return the drive for replacement. New hard drives are inexpensive and may be a good time for you to purchase a larger one. I would not depend on either scandisk or NDD to find hard drive errors. Only the makers diagnostics can find obscure errors. Just because ME thinks the drive is OK and will install doesn't mean that XP will. As for MS support, forget it. This forum is your best source for information and ***istance. Don't waste your time and money trying to contact MS. |

Two things to try: 1) Remove the existing target installation partition, let setup create and format it - do not use a dos boot floppy. 2) Download and run a drive diagnostic to check the state of the drive, as it may indeed be corrupted. WinXP is very fussy about hardware. These tools are commonly available for free from the various drive makers, and should be able to give you some idea of what state the drive is in. -- Best of Luck, Rick Rogers aka "Nutcase" MS-MVP - Win9x Windows isn't rocket science!
